Shame on you McDonald’s! (1 minute read)

The World Health Organisation recommends 6 or less teaspoons of sugar a day. Let’s see what the McDonald’s Chocolate Shake has to say about this.

Recently, I had the opportunity to spread my #Divideby4 concept to approximately 800 children at my old primary school. What a mind-blasting experience. Rumour has it that the janitor is still cleaning up remnants of people’s minds from the auditorium.

The concept was simple

Let’s take a look at the notorious McDonald’s Chocolate Shake as an example.

STEP 1 : CHECK THE BACK

Check the nutrition label, which in this case was conveniently not on the product itself, and locate the amount of “Sugars”.

STEP 2: DIVIDE BY 4

There are 4 grams of sugar in a teaspoon of sugar so take the amount of “Sugars” and divide by 4 to work out the number of teaspoons this represents.

STEP 3: COUNT IT OUT

Literally count out each teaspoon of sugar in your head and make an informed decision

It is criminal to have 17 teaspoons of sugar in any food or drink product. Jamie Oliver, in his amazing TED talk, goes as far as to call this sort of thing “child abuse”.

Share this message and take a stand against the McDonald’s of the world. If the industry must put these ridiculous amounts of sugar into people’s food and drinks, the public deserves to know exactly how much. NOT in terms of grams which is intentionally vague but, in terms of something that we can all understand. I suggest TEASPOONS. #Divideby4
