Disclaimer: Running a business is not like the movies

A bunch of wannabe entrepreneurs. A whiteboard. Multiple laptops. Takeaway food. Hardwork. Sleep deprivation. A glorious product launch. As far as hollywood is concerned, these are the necessary ingredients for instant success. This is urrrr….how shall I put this….it’s absolute BS.  In the movies, this montage takes about 30 seconds (motivational soundtrack comes separately).

The reality is that this 30 second montage equates to hours/days/weeks/months/years of TEDIOUS hard work. It’s the bridge between an idea and its execution.

Starting my business has been fricking amazing. I love the idea that if I get this thing up and running, I can potentially help 10s, 100s, 1000s or even 100s of 1000s of people! But, not all of it is amazing. A lot of it, is tedious and boring! It’s hard to get pumped about business liability insurance or registering for an Auskey or filling online government forms and waiting weeks to get a reply.  Honestly, all I want to do is get on with it. I want to help as many people as I can and make some mula in the process so my wife will stop saying “I married you under the impression you were going to be a doctor” #stillamadoctor.

In these times, I remember something one of my senior doctors told me, “As you go up the ranks, people will give you a lot of shit, sometimes you have to eat it and sometimes you don’t, but most the time you do”. I try my best to extract wisdom out of anything so here it goes. The shit is a metaphor for the adversity that needs to be overcome to achieve anything worthwhile. It doesn’t taste good. It doesn’t look good. You eat it anyway. The big picture trumps everything.

Nevertheless, I am always thinking, maybe someone else can eat the shit? Outsourcing is something that I will look into aggressively as I move forward because one of my ultimate goals is to achieve freedom of time (not just freedom of money). The less annoying things I have to do, the more time I will have to do the things I love and the ultimately, the happier I will be.

As always, comment and share if you like this or draw any value from reading this.

Let me know if you want me to write on anything in particular!
